Position Summary
The position of Mechanic Technician I is responsible to ensure all vehicles are safe for the road by providing preventative maintenance on all District vehicles, equipment or tools. This position is responsible for fleet, facility and equipment maintenance.

Essential Functions
The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be required and assigned.

Mechanic
  • Receives work orders and tests, service, and performs maintenance on vehicles and equipment, maintaining records of work completed and supplies used.
  • Perform routine lubrication and oil/filter changes on vehicles and equipment, as directed.
  • Inspect vehicles, including but not limited to, tires brakes, hoses and belts, and equipment for safety and/or mechanical problems, report conditions to supervisor; effect repairs.
  • Inspect, adjust and replace necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
  • Repair brake, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air, exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
  • Inspects belts and hoses and replaces as necessary
  • Cleans, tests and replaces vehicle batteries.
  • Checks fluid levels in District vehicles, and light/heavy-duty equipment. Checks and replaces wiper blades and light bulbs as needed. Checks and refills DEF fluid as appropriate.
  • Refuels all equipment generators, light and heavy-duty equipment in the field.
  • Checks condition of tires and properly inflates, replaces, balances, and aligns tires as necessary. Maintains tire inventory.
  • Performs road test of vehicles and equipment to verify completion of work.
  • Washes and details interior and exterior of District vehicles.
  • Maintains cleanliness of shop and working order of shop equipment.
  • Provide emergency field assistance to disabled equipment as needed and deemed appropriate.
  • Reports to work for on-call after hour needs, as assigned.
  • Drive to and from repair facilities.
  • Reads, interprets and utilizes flow charts, schematic diagrams and equipment manuals in both hard copy and electronic/internet format.

  • Ability to prioritize duties to accomplish a high volume of work product while adapting to constant changes in priority.
  • Knowledge of automotive mechanics, particularly of gas and diesel engines, transmission, and generators.
  • Knowledge of automotive repair and electrical systems.
  • Ability to maintain accurate and legible notes.
  • Knowledge of District policies, procedures and practices.
  • Ability to analyze and assist in the preparation of organizational and functional reports from research data.
  • Knowledge of the use of a multi-line telephone system.
  • Ability to function at beginning level in facets of Microsoft Word programs – word, excel, and Firehouse. Ability to input into BD databases, extract data and develop/analyze reports.
  • Skill in operating basic office equipment such as fax and copy/scan machines.
  • Ability to calculate mathematical calculations.
  • Ability to work the allocated hours of the position.

  • Ability to communicate effectively with other members of the staff, supervisor, and the public.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in both written and verbal form.
  • Must be proficient in workplace English and spelling.

Required Education, Experience, Licensing, and Certifications/Coursework
Education:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent. Specialized education in mechanical field or any mechanical certifications or trade school.
  • Possession of a valid South Carolina Driver’s License.
Experience:
  • Two (2) years’ experience in automotive mechanics, particularly of gas and diesel engines, transmission, generators, and welding.
  • Experience in the fire service and/or work with fire apparatus strongly preferred.
  • Proficiency with office and diagnostic computers including Microsoft Word, Excel, Internet, databases, and ability to learn other software applications utilized by the department.
Certification/Coursework: Completion, within one (1) year. Requirements are subject to change to ensure methods are current with industry standards.
  • ASE A1 Automobile/Light Truck – Engine Repair
  • ASE A5 Automobile/Light Truck – Brakes
  • ASE T8 Medium/Heavy Truck – Preventative Maintenance Inspection
